Mathematics Placement Requirements

Placement into MAT 130, Precalculus, requires the following:

• A grade of C or above in MAT 055 (MAT 013 under older catalogues), Intermediate Algebra, or the equivalent; or
• ACT Math score of 23 or higher; or
• SAT Math score of 540 or higher; or
• Compass Algebra score of 63 or higher.

Placement into MAT 125, College Algebra, requires:

• A passing grade in MAT 055 (MAT 013 under older catalogues), Intermediate Algebra, or the equivalent; or
• ACT Math score of 21 or higher; or
• SAT Math score of 500 or higher; or
• Compass Algebra score of 59 or higher.

Placement into MAT 055, Intermediate Algebra (institutional credit) requires:

• A passing grade in MAT 045 (MAT 012 under older catalogues), Elementary Algebra, or the equivalent; or
• ACT Math score of 18 or higher; or
• SAT Math score of 440 or higher; or
• Compass Algebra score of 42 or higher; or
• ACT Math score of 17 or higher, plus placement into GSR 102, plus a passing grade in a High School Algebra course; or
• SAT Math score of 420 or higher, plus placement into GSR 102, plus a passing grade in a High School Algebra course; or
• Compass Algebra score of 38 or higher, plus placement into GSR 102, plus a passing grade in a High School Algebra course.

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science may, at the Chair’s discretion, give placement exams other than those listed above and place students based on their scores on these placement exams. All cutoff scores will be shared with the Placement Coordinator and the Director of Academic Advising.
