Thirteen teams participated in the 2023 Battle of the Books, held last week on campus. BOTB is a reading competition for deaf and hard of hearing students in grades 5 to 8. Students across the nation and in the United Kingdom read the same assigned books and then compete against each other by answering true or false, short answer, multiple choice, and presentation-style questions about the books they read. This year, Washington School for the Deaf won the Blue Division; Heathlands School from the United Kingdom won the Buff Division; and Illinois School for the Deaf won the Bison Division. There were many individual winners as well. For a complete list of results and awards, visit the Gallaudet University Youth Programs website.

Next up is the 27th annual National Academic Bowl for Deaf and Hard of Hearing High School Students, April 20 to 24. Sixteen teams will compete in this competition – the top five finishers from the regional competitions held in Oregon, Texas, and Kentucky earlier this year, plus one wild-card team. Visit the Gallaudet University Youth Programs website for more information, including the daily schedule.
